The Golden Age of Travel in French
Posters
1900 1940
The French Library celebrates the Golden
Age of Travel with an exhibition of vintage French posters from International
Poster Gallery of Newbury Street. The show begins with posters from
the turn of the century, when the Grand Tour of the upper class gave
way to a more widespread age of tourism. Around 1900 the rail networks
in most of Europe and North America were nearing completion; at the
same time, ocean travel became faster and more comfortable. The new
art form of the poster was ideal to spread the word.
By the Roaring Twenties, tourism was a
big business, with governments competing for prestige and currency through
luxurious and technologically advanced ocean liners. The show continues
through the arrival of the Normandie in 1935, which signaled
the apex of this golden age. The glory of this marvelous ship was short-lived
as a deepening global depression and rising international tensions brought
the end to this carefree and relaxed world.
After World War II, a new era began in
tourism with the advent of widespread intercontinental air travel. Once
again, posters witnessed the completion of global networks that would
make travel faster and cheaper.
The exhibit concludes with
some of the posters fromAir Frances postwar travel series.

Larger than Life
The Swiss Object Poster 1919 - 1959
Objects larger than life - so large they become
icons - are the subject matter of Switzerland's leading poster style
after World War I and continuing beyond mid-century. Featuring hyper-realistic
drawings of everyday objects with little text, the style focused everything
on the beauty and precision of even the most mundane products. As a
group, these posters reveal breathtaking graphic skill and unprecedented
printing quality, and are in many ways the culmination of the classic
age of the lithographic poster.
We have assembled a spectacular assortment of these
images - more than 50 from the best Swiss artists, such as Baumburger,
Birkhauser, Matter, Stoecklin, and Leupin.
